International Go Topless Day
Today, August 28th, 2016 proud feminist will be taking part in an event that has sparked quite the movement around the world. International Go Topless Day inspires women everywhere to free their mind and embrace the idea of going topless in an effort to promote women’s equality. “As long as men are allowed to be topless in public, women should have the same constitutional right. Or else, men should have to wear something to hide their chests” Rael, founder of GoTopless.org
History of Go Topless Day
On August 26, 1920 Women in the United States earned the right to vote on the basis of Gender Equality. This was a huge milestone and a great day for women everywhere. At the time, many thought the day would never come when they would overcome such a historic event. Fast forward 51 years to 1971, President Richard Nixon recognized this day as “National Women’s Equality Day” in hopes to continue the movement of Gender equality and recognize women rights by giving it its own special day. Thus, Go Topless Day is celebrated on the Sunday closes to August 26.
Although women have come so far in the struggle for equality, there is still one thing that men have the right to enjoy without being frowned upon or looked at differently. That basic right is being able to go out in public without a shirt on. It might sound silly to some, horrendous to others but in 2007, Rael started a revolution that has acquired a substantial following. Today, in 2016, many countries around the world celebrate this glorious day and parade around topless. As you can see from this nifty little map provided by GoTopless.org. Here are some of the locations around the U.S. that are partaking in this event.
